Volunteering at Mkombozi
Since its creation in 2000, Mkombozi Vocational Training and Community Development Centre (MVTCDC) has welcomed a constant stream of volunteers
from all over the world and worked in partnership with various volunteer organizations such as Cross Cultural Solutions and Visions in Action.
Our volunteers are valued members of the Mkombozi team. The interaction with foreign teachers greatly benefits the students as it not only
enhances their language skills but also builds up a foundation for their understanding of other cultures.
Your commitment
Mkombozi VTC is a learning institution specialized in vocational training and thus requires committed volunteers who will be able to support
the centre throughout their stay in Moshi. The school's organization is somewhat flexible so that each volunteer is assigned personalized
tasks depending on their qualifications and abilities. Prior professional experience of teaching or social work is most appreciated but people
with a passion for their native language can also bring a precious contribution to the growth of our students.
As a volunteer, you might be expected to perform the following tasks:
- Teach teenagers and young adults English, French or German.
- Develop the existing curriculum and/or lesson plans.
- Assist the students with basic computer tasks (mostly using Microsoft Office)
- Occasionally help with office work (typing or proof-reading documents)
- Participate in the elaboration of project proposals.
- Fundraising
Ideally, you should be able to commit yourself for at least one semester, i.e. 6 months. Continuity is an essential factor participating in the
quality and efficiency of the training so that we are not willing to take in volunteers for a very short period of time.
Work atmosphere
The work atmosphere at Mkombozi is rather informal and you will find that the local teachers are very supportive. Teaching a foreign language
requires treasures of imagination so you might want to bring your own textbook or any other teaching material you deem useful.

I came to know about Mkombozi VTC through a local friend of mine who introduced me to the school. Shortly after meeting Mama Mshana – the project
coordinator - I decided to volunteer at the centre as a French and English teacher for the hotelier class.
The decisive element in my joining Mkombozi has been the spirit of the place. I most enjoy working here because of the peaceful atmosphere that
reigns over the school. The teaching staff is also very dedicated to the students development, which makes Mkombozi an ideal place to hone my
professional skills. Although I already had experience teaching in Asia and in Europe, I took this opportunity to start afresh in a completely new
field for me (namely vocational training) and threw myself into the challenge with enthusiasm.
During my time here, I designed and taught a curriculum for the hotelier class and helped with administrative work when my presence was needed.
I can say without much exaggeration that I have been as much of a student as a teacher. Within three months, I was able to converse in Swahili and
I had fully adjusted to the local way of life. I keep in touch with some of my former students, as we developed a mutual liking that is the best
reward I could think of.
If you are interested in volunteering in Moshi and need more information, do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail. It is always a pleasure to
spread the word! Karibu sana Tanzania! (Welcome to Tanzania)
Practical Details
Volunteers are supposed to support themselves, as Mkombozi is not able to offer an allowance. The centre provides free lunch for all the staff
members and will help the volunteer find a place to stay and settle immigration issues.
Here is a breakdown of some of the major expenses you should plan:
- 6-month volunteer visa: $120
- Monthly rent: $20 to $40 [NB: you might also have to buy a mattress or a bed since most rooms are not furnished]
- Public transport (per month): $20
- Food expenses will vary depending on your eating habits (if you cook at home or eat out a lot for example). For the record, a full meal at a local restaurant will cost you less than $1. Foreign food tends to be well overpriced though.
- One hour at the Internet café: $1
